Azanian Student
Movement
Background
The Azanian Student Movement (Azasm) is a Black Student Movement
drawing its membership from High School level of education. It
was formed on the 3rd July 1983 at Kranzenstein Mission near the
University of the North (Turfloop) in Pietersburg, Nortern
Province.
It was formed as a result of the political homelessness in which
the Black Students, who were Black Consciousness faithfulls
found themselves in, when in 1981 the up to the then BC AZASO
abandoned the Black Consciousness ideology for something "more
contemporary".
Our progress, through out the years, has discomforted and caused
displeasure in a number of persuasions - this is very much
evident in the wounds on the bodies of our members and the
constant harassment of our supporters.
Aims and Objectives
1. To create a forum for Black Students to articulate and to
express their aspirations as part of the Black Community.
2. To mobilise and unite students around the liberatory ideology
of Black Consciousness.
3. To encourage the involvement of the students in problems
facing the student community.
4. To work towards a nation-building educational system which
will instill a sense of creativity, identity and self-reliance
amongst the students of AZANIA.
5. To work towards the total transformation of the present
system in this country, and the ushering in of an anti-racist,
Socialist Republic of Azania.
