MERRY CHRISTMAS! We end the year on a rather depressing note, witnessing as we did, the big world conference on climate change in Copenhagen, Denmark, failing to agree on measures to reduce the emission of harmful gases into the atmosphere that contribute towards the raising of the temperature on our planet. For mainly selfish reasons, our generation is refusing to change the unsustainable way of living and producing energy, which will save the earth for future generations. An agreement at that big conference would have been a wonderful Christmas gift to all of us. Nevertheless, this being a season of goodwill to all humankind let us spread kindness and humanity to all. Let all of us give our families, especially the younger ones, quality time and attention. Let them enjoy our company this Christmas. Many of us have very little spending money in this period of economic hardships, retrenchments and general scarcity of jobs. Precisely for this reason, let us open our homes and hearts to our neighbours, sharing the little we have with one another. As we make merry, let us keep in our thoughts our health workers, security personnel and others who have to be on duty during the festive season. Where possible, let us show them our appreciation by any appropriate gesture. If we can, let us give them a drink or something to eat.
