Mangena committed to serving South AfricaNs
(AZAPO – political education secretariat)
22 March 2009

Minister Mosibudi Mangena's preoccupation is to serve the country and the nation as a whole. Thabile Mange’s article “Mangena’s service in the Cabinet harms Azapo” (March 10) is full of contradictions and fallacies.

He fantasizes about Azapo being “harmed”, but does not say how. By his own admission, Mosibudi Mangena has a high “work ethic” and has made an “invaluable contribution in the Ministry of Science and Technology”. Yet he demands that “the Azapo leader should do the honourable thing and step down”.

It is baffling how Mange can call for Mangena’s resignation at the end of his term of office.

He declares that “Mangena was not in the Cabinet to serve the interests of Azapo, but those of the ANC”.

He is wrong. Mangena’s preoccupation is to serve the country and the nation as a whole. In his maiden speech in 2001, Mangena said in Parliament that Azapo’s mission was not to celebrate the failures of the ruling party, because such failures meant increasing poor people’s suffering.

It is for this reason that Azapo released its president to serve the nation. Mange would do well to bear in mind that the state does not belong to any ruling party, but to the people as a whole, regardless of their political affiliation.
